As fall and winter approaches, we need to take extra good care of our elders. The cold can be challenging for our dear elderly family members, especially since they are much more susceptible for diseases that flourish during the cold months. The cold keeps the body busy trying to get warm, which ends up weakening the immune system, especially with elderly people. This is why it is beneficial to keep the feet warm, as this warmth spreads throughout the body, helping the blood vessels open and transport the heat further. Our boot slipper model that reaches above the ankles gives further support and warmth.
Another reason why glerups are a good choice when it comes to house footwear for the elderly, is the way the slippers grip the foot. They stay on and give a sense of support, which can significantly reduce uncertainty of walking, even on various surfaces. Their soles also have a good grip on underlying surfaces, making them a good support when weary feet are wearing them. They don’t have adjustable closures, but the slippers themselves take form after your foot, making them feel like they were made for the person wearing them. Having slippers that fit your feet in that way can provide a better sense of stability, which is important when legs, knees and feet aren’t as young as they used to be.
There are three common denominators when talking about design from Denmark. It must be simple, practical and elegant. And in our opinion, glerups checks all these boxes. Our footwear has a simple design with no extra accessories and such, just comfy footwear. They are practical in the sense that they can be worn at many occasions, and with the two different types of soles, you can choose between footwear that’s practical for outside use (natural rubber) or indoors use (leather). Their neutral look and the subtle colors are what make them elegant, as this also contributes to them being an easy fit into any wardrobe. The colors are inspired by Nordic nature, which is also a trademark for Danish design, finding inspiration in surrounding nature.
The wool blend used in our slippers has many natural properties. It is a blend that we have refined through many years, resulting in a wool blend with wool from Danish Gotland sheep and wool from New Zealand. It has the ability to keep your feet warm when it’s cold, but can also cool your feet, when it’s warm.
The fibers of the wool absorb the excess heat and moisture. Bad odor will not be an issue either when wearing glerups as they also absorb the smell, and release it again with the excess moisture, when the slippers are given a rest for a bit, preferably outside in the fresh air.
This leads us to the durability of the slippers as they are not meant to last just one season. If you take good care of them, you will be able to enjoy your glerups slippers for a longer time than ordinary slippers made from other materials. Another benefit of this wool blend is the fact that the molecular structure of the wool resembles that of human skin, making them extra comfortable even when wearing them directly on bare feet. This makes them very suitable for elderly people as their skin is often sensitive and has a harder time in fabric made from synthetic fibers.
When glerups started, it wasn’t with the thought of becoming an international brand. It started with Nanny Glerup, who wanted to learn a new skill that she could have as a hobby. She wanted to learn something new, something that would produce something useful. She decided on taking a course in felting – making things out of wool. Her first product was a pair of felted boot slippers for her husband Ove. He was touched by her loving gesture, but even more so, felt so comfortable when he wore the slippers that he was soon seen wearing them everywhere he went. Friends and family noticed and soon, Nanny got requests for slippers from many people. After a while, she and Ove decided to purchase a small farm just outside the town they lived in. Here there would be room enough for Nanny to set up a workshop for her production of slippers and also for them to have a few sheep of their own, making them self-reliant when it came to providing wool for the slippers.
This went well for a while – Nanny would make up to two pairs a day and started to go to conferences and markets with other amateur designers, making more people aware of her unique footwear. The name glerups started creating a buzz and they received orders from all over Denmark. Nanny started having a hard time keeping up with the demand, and when an order for 200 pairs of slipper boots for kids came in from a Swedish shoe store, she realized much to her dismay that this just wouldn’t be possible for her to do by herself. She had to turn down the order, but it became the start of the expansion that led to glerups becoming a brand, which is now recognized all over the world for its high quality footwear and the soft comfortability these slippers provide.
