While adhering to the traditional craftsmanship, we at glerups keep on trying to refine our footwear. This goes along nicely with Danish design philosophy of making things that are simple, functional and elegant. Our slippers fit perfectly to that description. As mentioned before, we strive to keep refining our footwear for our customers to enjoy them even more. This mix of wool from Danish Gotland sheep and wool from New Zealand has been a big part of the growth of glerups as a brand. It almost sounds too good to be true, but believe us when we say that this is almost magic.

This combination of wool has the ability to keep your feet warm, when it’s cold outside, but keep them cool, when the weather is warm. This is due to the structure of the wool that transports excess heat away from the feet and helps them feel fresh even when you wear them for an extended period of time.

Keeping your feet healthy has never been easier

Another amazing benefit with these slippers is that the molecular structure of the wool is akin to that of human skin, meaning that even in bare feet this wool will not irritate your skin, like slippers in other materials might. The origin of glerups

When looking at the origin of glerups as a company, it almost seems like a fairytale story in real life. Nanny Glerup, an ordinary woman with a nice and quiet life in a part of Denmark, where things are calm and idyllic, once saw an advertisement for classes in different types of handcraft. She signed up and chose to learn how to make things in felted wool. She wanted to learn how to make things on her own, as the self sufficiency craze was flourishing, and she landed on making a pair of felted slipper boots for her husband Ove.

A hobby that grew

Ove was both moved and excited about his new footwear and soon, he wore them both around the house, but also in town and wherever he went. Friends and family started asking Nanny to make them slippers as well and soon, their home grew too small to both live and work in. Together, and to much surprise for their friends and family, they bought a small farm. Here, Ove saw a lot of possibilities. Part of the old stable could be turned into a workshop for Nanny and there would also be space enough to keep a few sheep so they could provide the wool themselves. As time passed, more people became interested in the slippers made on the small farm.

And then things took off

Nanny started attending conferences and other events for people like her, with a homemade product and she gained a lot of recognition. But when a Swedish shoe company wanted to make an order for 200 pairs of boot slippers for kids, she realized that the demand for footwear had outgrown her capability to keep up. Much her own dismay, she had to recline the order – and then she started planning how to expand. glerups was made as a company and staff and production started to grow steadily.
