Danish design made wearable

At glerups we proudly take our place in the long line of Danish designers who made a name for themselves abroad. Our footwear has been purchased by people from all over the world and we credit some of this to us following the Danish design philosophy of making something simple, functional and elegant. Those three words are the perfect description of our slippers – their simple aesthetics of their design in neutral colors inspired by the Nordic nature, the multiple possibilities for usage and the subtle elegance of the slippers. Our choice of colors in the collection are all in alignment with how nature unfolds in Denmark. There is gray like the sandy beaches of Denmark, blue like the winter sky, the green/blue-ish hue of the Northern Sea and dark green like the many forests we have – among others. The discreet color palette makes the slippers fit into any wardrobe and style easily. 

Soles

Our slippers come with either leather soles or natural rubber soles. The leather soles are for those, who like to unwind indoors, reading a good book or just relaxing watching a movie on a night in, or even doing small chores around the house, like cooking or cleaning. The rubber soles are for the woman, who enjoys relaxing both inside and outside. They can be used for a walk in nature or maybe even some light gardening. Both types of soles provide you with a maximum of comfort and support for your feet. 

A wool blend like no other

One of the things that make our slippers unique is the special blend of wool, which we use in our production. It is a mix refined through the years, the result being an impeccable experience for the wearer of the slippers. Not only are they comfortable because of the softness of the wool, but the wool itself contains properties that really make our slippers stand out. The wool mix, which is made from wool from Danish Gotland sheep and wool from New Zealand, has the ability to keep your feet warm, when it’s cold, but also cool them on the hot days. This is because of the breathable structure of the wool – it is able to circulate the heat and air, which makes the slippers even more comfortable to wear. In addition to this, the molecular structure of the wool itself resembles that of human skin, which enhances the feeling of comfort, as it is less likely to irritate the skin, while you wear them. 

The summary of all this is that these slippers are actually helping you keep your feet healthy. If you have problems with foot odor, these slippers are efficient too. They absorb the odor and lead it away from the skin, so you feel fresh when wearing them – and the odor disappears after you leave the slippers outside in the fresh air for a while. Made with love – the glerups origin story

Once upon a time, a Danish woman by the name of Nanny Glerup was reading her local newspaper and saw an advertisement for a class in making things out of felted wool. As she wanted to learn a new skill, she signed up for the class and found that she was a fast learner and enjoyed working with wool this way. She wanted her first production to be something special for her husband, Ove and settled on making him a pair of wool boot slippers. Ove was both touched and excited about the gesture, to the extent that he wore them practically everywhere he went. People around him started to notice the shoes and how Ove praised their comfort, and family and friends started asking Nanny to make them a pair of slippers too. What started as a hobby, began to grow into a side business and it was evident that things had to change, if Nanny were to continue making the slippers herself. When Ove then heard of an old farm for sale not far from them, he made the decision to purchase it, as he saw possibilities in the old buildings. Nanny could have a real workshop plus they would have a small stable with enough room to keep a handful of sheep, so that they could become self-sufficient in providing wool for the production of footwear. At the same time, Nanny started going to different conferences and such for amateur designers and small business owners. Everytime she went, people were impressed with the quality and comfort of her homemade slippers and soon, she began receiving orders from the entire country. As the production grew, she and Ove moved out of the farm, which is now the headquarters of glerups. With time, the popularity of the slippers gained recognition abroad, which is why you are reading this right now. Today, glerups have fans all over the world and it makes us happy that a thing as simple as a pair of well crafted slippers can be appreciated by people everywhere.
