Danish design tradition stretches back a long time. When glerups was started, the founders never thought it would have the reach as they do today. It was purely coincidental that the slippers ended up fitting into the Danish design philosophy of things being simple, functional and elegant.
They have a simple design, their aesthetics are subtle and without much ado. They are functional in usage – they come with two different types of soles, depending on what you need them for. Are you the indoor type, who likes to feel cozy with a good book or a podcast on the couch? Then you need the leather sole. Are you more outdoorsy and want to spend your leisure time in the garden, the woods or by the sea, the natural rubber sole is for you.
At glerups, we have spent years developing and refining the wool blend that we use for our footwear today. This is of great importance since it is the key to make the comfiest slippers possible. It is almost a science that goes into getting this blend just right for our footwear. We use a blend of wool from Danish Gotland sheep and wool from New Zealand. This blend is close to magic. It has the ability to keep your feet cool and fresh, when it’s warm, but they can also keep your feet warm, when it’s cold. This makes them wearable all year round. The molecular structure of the wool resembles the structure of our skin, which means that you are much less likely to experience skin irritation, even when you wear the slippers for long periods of time, with or without socks on.
Some people are struggling with sweaty feet and that smell just isn’t pleasant. If this is the case for you, don’t worry, glerups got you covered. Just as the wool absorbs excess heat and moisture, it also draws unpleasant odor in. All that is needed for all of this to disappear from the slippers again, is to let them “rest” for a bit, ideally outside, where the fresh air quickly will have them feeling as good as new again. That’s another thing about slippers from glerups, they aren’t meant to last just one season and then be replaced. You can extend their longevity by taking good care of them. The story of glerups sounds like something from a movie. It all started many years ago in the Northern part of Denmark in a small town. Here, Nanny Glerup wanted to learn a new skill and enlisted in a class in making things in felted wool. She wanted to be able to produce things that were actually of use and would be both appreciated and worn. So she settled on making a pair of felted wool boots for her husband Ove.
Ove was both delighted by the gift and proud of his productive wife, and he soon found that the boots were so comfortable that he would wear them every time he got the chance. Friends and family started noticing this newfound fashion choice of his and were interested in getting boots themselves. Nanny started taking orders, but soon realized that their home didn’t quite have the capacity for her to keep on making them.
She and Ove talked about it and decided to buy a small farm, where Nanny could have a real workshop and there would also be room for a couple of sheep, making them self-sufficient in providing wool for the production of footwear. Simultaneously, Nanny started attending conferences and the like for people like her.
Things started to take off and Nanny received orders from all over the country. She was beginning to have a hard time keeping up with orders and when she had to turn down an order for 200 boots for children from a Swedish shoe store, she realized that she needed to increase production. glerups was turned into a company and people were hired to help. Slowly, but surely, it kept growing and today, glerups sell footwear to people from all over the world. The farm, Nanny and Ove bought, is glerups’ Danish headquarters today.
