Enjoy the Danish concept of “hygge”

Denmark, from which glerups originates, is a small country in the Northern part of Europe. We like to take things as they come and try not to get too caught up in the little things. One thing that is a major common denominator for Danes is our homemade word “hygge”, often pronounced by foreigners as “hoo-gah”. It is a word that doesn’t translate directly into any other language, but the closest thing is cozy or homely. It simply means to have a good time with what you are doing, whether alone or together with people. whose company you enjoy. It can be anything from a cup of coffee with a good friend, to drinks with your coworkers after work, playing a game with the family, while the snow is coming down or just a quiet moment to yourself, reflecting on the day, reading a book or listening to your favorite podcast.

Elevate the moments of hygge with a pair of slippers from glerups

Feeling comfortable and relaxed is a big part of hygge and our winter slippers for men are perfect footwear for these occasions. The wool will keep your feet warm and fresh at the same time and you will feel comfortable when wearing them around the house. They are made with focus on both traditional craftsmanship and new development in production in mind, from materials that are carefully chosen to ensure you footwear that keeps your feet fresh and comfortable.

Danish design made wearable

As Danish design goes, glerups checks all three boxes. Our slippers are simple, functional and elegant, which is at the core of Danish design philosophy. Their simplicity makes them functional, as they are made without a whole lot of extra, just a slipper with great natural properties. They are a great fit into any wardrobe and you can wear them for practically anything. They have a subtle elegance to them, which combined with the Nordic inspired colors make them quite unique when it comes to footwear.

The renowned wool blend

The unique wool blend which we use for our footwear, is one of the keys to the high quality of our comfy and durable slippers. Made with wool from Danish Gotland sheep and wool from New Zealand, this mix is packed with natural benefits to make your feet feel their best. It can keep your feet warm during cold days, but also keep them fresh and cool on warm days. The wool absorbs excess heat and moisture, and also any odor that might occur, so you will have a fresh feeling even when wearing them for longer periods of time.

Another benefit is how easy they are to maintain. Just leave them outside for a while in the fresh air and they will feel as good as new. You can wear them on your bare feet or with socks, as the molecular structure of the wool resembles that of human skin, enabling them to keep your feet and skin healthy and avoid irritation, which can occur with slippers in other materials.

Different soles for different settings

Our slippers come with two different types of soles. One made of leather and the other made of natural rubber. The leather sole is perfect for indoors activity, hanging out, relaxing or even doing small chores. We have even noticed that a lot of people use them at work, especially when working in an office setting – these slippers just bring a homelike feeling to the wearer, no matter where they are.

The natural rubber sole can be worn both indoors and outdoors, but is made with the intention of making an outdoor friendly slipper. It is perfect for gardening, walking along the beach or a nice stroll in the woods. Some people bring them on hikes, so that their weary feet can get a break at the end of the day, while sitting around the campfire recharging.

How it all started

The story of glerups started with founder Nanny Glerup looking for a productive hobby many years ago. She found a class in making things out of felted wool and made a pair of slippers for her husband Ove. Touched by the gesture, Ove proudly wore them anywhere he went. People around him were curious as to where he got them and Nanny started receiving requests from everyone around them.

Ove and Nanny started getting an idea that they were onto something and to help the production, they bought a small farm with room for Nanny to have a workshop and also room in the stable for a few sheep, so they could be self-sufficient in providing wool for production. Nanny started attending conferences for other Danish designers and soon, orders were coming in from all over the country.

Nanny tried to keep up with production that started reaching beyond the borders of Denmark. But when a Swedish company placed an order for 200 pairs of children’s boots, she had to decline, much to her dismay. This made her think outside the box and start expanding, and soon glerups was sending footwear all over the world. Nanny and Ove had to move away from the farm which in the meantime had become the headquarters of glerups production, which it still is today. glerups is recognized for their high quality footwear around the world and we are happy to be able to let the tale continue.
